Dunnett is just a hell of a writer. What I liked most about Queen's Play was the author's gradual and subtle crafting of Lymond's growing consciousness of leadership. It was very well handled.

In this book, which is the second of the Lymond chronicles (16th century), Francis Crawford (Master of Lymond) was a little less intellectually scintillating than he was in The Game of Kings, but still dazzling and dangerous. His wit and language skills were downplayed a little bit as he took on the task of undercover bodyguard for the 10-year-old Mary Queen of Scots. Almost all the action takes place on French soil, in the effete and jewel-encrusted court of Henri II. And when I say action, it's brutal. It leaves Lymond with broken bones, bleeding wounds, or poison in his blood. I love Dunnett's intellect, but at times I think: does she always have to write with such sleight of hand, making the rest of us feel a little dim-witted? It's her style and I do like it, but it's often like watching a drama through a lace curtain and not being able to tell what's really going on. Then, after the dust settles, she gracefully summarizes (never haughtily, thank you) the upshot of the conflict. If you can deal with the fact that every character has at least two names, and if you can suspend your need to always know who's doing what, you'll love it.

It is two years since the close of The Game of Kings and someone is planning the murder of young Mary Queen of Scots, and Mary of Guise summons Francis Crawford of Lymond to France to stop the murderous plot. Francis comes in disguise as a member of the entourage of a Prince of Ireland, and the game is on. Thady Boy Ballagh nee' Lymond charms the decadent French court with his wit, sarcasm and music as Dunnett slowly unpeels the layers of her tale with plot twists and surprise turns around every corner. No one is what they appears to be at first glance, even Francis. Is Thady Boy really a drunken sot or is someone trying to poison him? Someone is trying to kill O'LiamRoe but is it because they think he is Lymond in disguise? Does the young Archer Robin Stewart who befriends Thady Boy have another motive than friendship?

While the book is slow at times, this story unfolds amidst the decadence of the French Court, it's hard drinking, partying courtiers, scheming noblemen, a race atop the roofs and steeples of Paris (brilliant!!), and ending in a nail biting finish as the plot to murder Mary comes full circle and Francis' efforts to save Mary include some members of the King's menagerie -- a couple of elephants, a roaring lion and even the chimpanzees get in the act.

Throughout, Francis Crawford is a fascinating hero, and is as suave, debonair, flawed and fascinating as only a 16th Century version of James Bond could be. This is a complicated tale, and one that a reader has to pay close attention to, if you let your mind wander you may have to back track occasionally as I did. However, if you enjoy a complicated, action packed, surprise around every corner type of novel ala Dumas, you will probably find this series to be right up your alley. Five stars and now on to book #3 The Disorderly Knights.
Despite my obsession with the novels of Dorothy Dunnett, I must agree in some sense with the negative reviews of Queens' Play. It is definitely my least favorite of the Lymond Chronicles. I simply could not buy into Lymond in disguise as Thady Boy. The first time I read the Lymond Chronicles I did not like Game of Kings or Queens' Play (the first two). But I persevered because of the reviews I read at . And I am so glad that I did. I have never read anything as totally enthralling as The Lymond Chronicles. It was when I started over at the beginning that I came to appreciate Game of Kings. More than appreciate, I realized that it is a masterpiece, a gem, a work of genius. So why did I not appreciate it the first time? Dunnett is always a difficult read but so worth it. And that is an understatement. Dunnett makes War and Peace seem like an easy read. Really. I think I was just overwhelmed by an author superior to and more challenging than any other I have ever read in my life. Dunnett was just more than I could handle. The second time I read Queens' Play I still could not warm to Thady Boy. I liked the novel more on second reading than the first time around but it remains my least favorite of the six. For me a high point of QP is the episode of the courageous dog and the cheetah. To those of you who gave up on the Lymond Chronicles I want to say please persevere. If you finish Disorderly Knights (the third novel) without becoming hooked, then give up. The Lymond Chronicles are not for you. But I can't imagine how anyone could finish DK and not continue. I recommended Lymond to my friend. She liked the first two but like me was not hooked until DK. (And like me she agrees that Queens' Play is her least favorite.) She told me that she stayed up Friday night til 2 a.m. with DK and then finished it Saturday night at 3 a.m. Now we are both rereading Lymond from the beginning and we are both loving Lymond even more the second time around.
